Objectives

1.

To engage in research that critically examines how the Internet of Things (IoT) is shaping business, society and local practices

2.

To provide opportunities for students to develop their skills and knowledge about IoT and to gain experience with the emerging technologies and platforms

In order to be able to participate in a world of things our students need to develop theoretical and practical knowledge about IoT technologies and their use and the analytical skills to look beyond the technology to understand its consequences and impact in business and society. To this end we have several courses and practica where students participate in learning and research projects about IoT and sociotechnical change and engage in research and development that leads to the production of ethically informed and sustainable IoT based products and services.

Our Work

Domains

IoT is evolving in different domains and industries; our work is producing in-depth studies of IoT in diverse domains such as logistics or health cities; with a special focus on local enterprises.

Organisations

Our aim is to understand the organisational uses, motivations and issues associated with the adoption and use of loT products and services. The focus is on loT value, readiness and business change.

Communication

Communication and dissemination of our research findings through our website, academic articles, industry reports, training materials etc.

Technologies

Research to track and understand the directions that technologies, standards, development platforms and devices are taking. Which technologies are used, and in which contexts?

Use Cases

To identify scenarios and use cases in different domains and using different technologies. Using consistent modelling techniques to create a collection of loT scenarios/use cases.

Demonstrators

Design and program prototypes of the identified use cases to demonstrate them in action. Showcasing different sensors, actuators, programming environments etc.

Issues Analysis of Social Media Risks

Although the use of Social Media provides many benefits, it also comes with a lot of risks that can affect people not only on a personal level, but also on a business or professional level. Therefore, the aim of this research is to conduct an in-depth analysis of Business and Professional Risks based on real-life incidents in order to find out when and how a risk occurs, who the responsible and affected stakeholders are and what could be potential consequences.

This work builds on and extends the FG EIM’s earlier work on Business and Professional Risks of Social Media.
